Circus First Birthday Party

IMG_1098 copy

I kind of dug myself into a hole by throwing such a big first birthday for Evelyn. Remember that one? It took weeks and weeks of prep to get it just right. And I couldn’t stand the thought of my kids, as teens, going through photos and noticing that Evelyn got an incredible first birthday and Remi’s was a cake and some balloons.

I thought I was doing a little less DIY with this party but man, it took the whole freaking day to set up. And the party was at 2! Whatevs. It still turned out exactly as I had envisioned. Maybe even better.

Circus seemed like such a fitting theme for a first birthday party! It’s the ultimate birthday experience. You get all those kooky games one plays at typical birthday parties, with a theme that draws guests in! Now granted, most of our guests were a little on the young side so some of the games were kind of lost on them. But I think a party like this is still appropriate for a first birthday if you have older kids coming. Or if you take the games up a notch, they could be more geared towards the adults. A party is a party…no matter the size of the guest.

The thing I regret the most about the decor is probably that I wasn’t able to make a circus tent happen. I did make one. It was a red and white striped table cloth draped over a hula hoop. It was going to hang over Remi’s high chair. But once we hung it up and the wind started blowing, it sort of a resembled a bag of trash. Sad.

I tried to create a small form of grand entrance at the entry to the backyard with tablecloths but it didn’t really translate. And at that point, I was running out of time. The good news it, guests only saw it for a fraction of the party. The good stuff is on the inside.

See those signs? I could have made them myself but I opted to buy them. Yes, I know it says ‘Carnival’ and not ‘Circus.’ Who care? The thing the least amount of people took part in was the face painting station. Understandable I suppose. My sister-in-law was in charge and ended up just painting Remi out of boredom. But it was pretty cute.

The station was equipped with regular face paint and face paint crayons. But also some temporary tattoos and glitter heart stickers.

IMG_1078 copy

What’s a circus without games?! Okay, yeah, that’s probably more of a carnival. It was a circus/carnival theme okay?

IMG_1080 copy

You like those mad artistic skills? That’s right, I painted that ha. We nailed my artwork to an Ikea wooden stool (you know the one, it’s amazeballs) and grabbed some hula hoops from the dollar store and BAM! Ring toss!

I should mention that 94% of the stuff for this party came from the dollar store. Seriously. Food included.

IMG_1079 copy

I kept calling this game Ball-In-Hole which doesn’t so much roll off the tongue but do you have a better name? It’s just four pool noodles (dollar store) and some packing tape. Lots of packing tape. Then I added some spunk with bows and points signs.

We already had the balls, because children. But I got the cute orange serving bowl at…you guessed it, the dollar store.

My acrobats were probably my favorite part of everything! Aren’t they so cute! I just attached Evelyn’s Barbies to some hula hoops and Chris hung them from the trees. How circus is that?!

Remington’s Winnie the Pooh photo shoot

IMG_8656 copy

I just can’t help myself when it comes to silly styled photo shoots including a disney element and my cute babies. And with the inclusion of Winnie the Pooh into the mix, I just couldn’t say no. This little shoot is the product of a lazy afternoon. It required quick costume changes and keeping Evelyn occupied so she didn’t see that her brother was playing with her Pooh toys.

I bought Remi’s Tigger outfit for our trip to Disneyland and then opened a suitcase to pack for the trip and found this Pooh costume. Seriously. I just found it. Like what is that? Full disclosure, I knew it existed..my sister bought it for Evelyn and then lost it and I just happened upon it in a suitcase in my attic. So with two outfits from Winnie the Pooh for the same little boy, I had to work in a faux twin photo. Am I cray or what?

Anyways, scroll down for some amateur shots of my cute little nugget and all his Winnie the Pooh pals.

Hey Girl Memes– Baby edition

Remember those 8 month photos I had taken of Remi? Well one of them was just so cute and studly that I couldn’t help myself but turn it into a meme. Or 8.

You know those “Hey Girl” meme of Ryan Gosling? That’s what these were modeled after. Obviously. These are really the most pleasing things an infant could ever say to his mother. Anyway, that’s all I really have to say. The memes can say the rest.

I present to you, Hey Girl memes, Baby style.

img_8619

“Hey Girl, I know you’ve had a hard day. You relax in the tub and I’ll take an extra long nap.”

img_8621

“Hey Girl, get ready for a full night’s sleep. I’m feeling extra sleepy.”

img_8623

“Hey Girl, No, don’t get up. I’ll put myself to bed tonight.”

img_8624

“Hey girl, That extra baby weight looks good on you.”

img_8625

“Hey girl, you can finish your book. I’ll just play quietly by myself.”

img_8627

“Hey girl, Don’t worry, I’ll change my own diaper.”

img_8769

“Hey girl, I’m really craving some mashed peas. Can I get you anything while I’m in the kitchen?”

Which would you add to the mix?

Mickey and Minnie photo shoot

remi_evie017_copy

Remi’s 8 month photo shoot just so happened to be right before our trip to Disneyland. I took advantage of the fact that I had gotten costumes for the kids for the trip and decided to get a few Mickey and Minnie shots while I had a talented photographer there (Malae Talley Photo).

I’m kind of a Disney fanatic so these pictures make me obsessively happy. Like I kind of can’t even handle it. These are perfect.

Remington likes Evelyn significantly more than she likes him. Which is unfortunate and makes it hard to take photos of the two of them. They turned out pretty cute nonetheless.

Take a look for yourself:

Remi 8 month baby photo shoot

remi_evie091

I had every intention of doing a 6 month photo shoot for Remi like I did for Evelyn. Well I kept having to reschedule and bottom line is, it ended up being more of an 8 month shoot. (Full disclosure, Remi is like 11 months now). Which is still adorable. It happened right after I bought the kids Easter outfits and right before our Disney trip so we got some really adorable Mickey and Minnie shots (in a post coming your way soon) and Easter shots.

At 8 months Rem is a moving machine. He pulls himself up on everything and cruises from couch to table to chair. He loves playing with his sister who would rather play with ANYONE else. He loves jumping in his bouncer chair. And he finally has two cute little teeth!

These incredible photos were taken by Malae Tally Photo, my go-to photographer and BFF.

An Early Easter

IMG_7566 copy

^^Notice the super cool pink hair

I knew we would be out of town for Easter and since I didn’t want to fill our suitcases with easter eggs, we celebrated Easter a week early. I was on such a “buy all the Disney souvenirs” kick that I already had a bunch of gifts to choose from to give Evelyn.

One of the best parts about having kids is reliving my childhood and buying toys that I’d like for myself. I’m not really sure why I fell in love with tsum tsums, but I did and I can’t seem to stop buying them. The good news is, they are the perfect size and shape to fit in extra large easter eggs!

IMG_7548 copy

It was kind of fun to have some little eggs filled with candy and some special surprise eggs with tsum tsums inside. I loved watching Evelyn find them. Naturally she wanted to open each one after she found it, but we were somehow able to convince her to wait until she found all of them.

IMG_7536 copy

I think Chris and I had more fun hiding eggs and watching Evelyn find them than she actually had finding them. All in all it was fun day and I think Evelyn is definitely a fan of Easter now.

IMG_7550 copy

She insisted on hunting for eggs with her butterfly net instead of her easter basket.

Remi was happy to chew on eggs.

^^Since it wasn’t actually Easter, I didn’t put the kids in their Easter outfits, and instead put Evelyn in this cute hand-me-down from her Aunt Lindsey. Lindsey actually happened to wear this dress to our wedding, so naturally I had her remake the photo for a cute throwback.

{Baby Boy Update} 6 months old

So keeping up with monthly updates while having two kids is exponentially more difficult than when I had one. Just saying.

Movement

Remi boy turned 6 months old on Christmas! Chris was convinced that he would be crawling by then and while he isn’t full on crawling, he’s doing a kind of army crawl thing which gets him from point A to point B. He’ll be real crawling soon though. He gets on his hands and knees and rocks back and forth. He’s moving way more, way faster than Evelyn ever did.

He can totally sit up on his own like a champ.  When he doesn’t feel like army crawling he just rolls everywhere. Like seriously all over the floor! I think it’s time to start baby proofing!

Sleeping

Remington will sleep well for like a week and then the rest of the month he’ll be up 3 or 4 times. There really is no normal for him. I just put him in bed with me to nurse him though, so for the most part I don’t really have to wake up. We moved him out of our room and into his crib in Evelyn’s room a couple months ago. Evelyn does great at sleeping through his cries in the middle of the night.

He takes roughly three naps a day in varying length. Usually one of his naps is around the same time as Evelyn’s nap, so I get a small break from both kids (for like 30 minutes. At least it’s something).

Eating

6 months means starting solids! We started him on baby oatmeal and after a few eating sessions complete with full body shudders, he’s finally getting used to the taste and texture and just laps it up.

He reaches with his hands and head towards the spoon which makes for a messy experience but super cute all the same.

Play

This little boy loves to coo and trill his lips. He will crack up if you tickle him or make faces at him. And seriously, his laugh is the cutest thing. He loves stealing Evelyn’s toys and she doesn’t love that so much. She’s already mastered the, “He’s touching me!”

I don’t think he has a favorite toy but without fail he will reach for an iphone if it’s anywhere near him. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s figured out my passcode already.

{Baby Boy Update} 2 months old

2 months001

In an effort to stop saying the phrase, “I can’t believe my baby is already______months old” I’m going to jump right into this boy’s stats:

Weight: 12 lbs 8 oz 43%

Length: 25″ 98%

Head: 41.5′ 93%

His weight percentile has gone down a tad but he’s a tall little guy.

2months003

^^Doesn’t he look huge in this pic??

I seriously love that he’s a little chunk though. I think it’s why he sleeps so well at night. And by ‘so well’ I mean he sleeps from about 10pm-6:00am which is seriously magical. If only he slept that well during the day.

2months 004

He’s such a little cuddle monkey and LOVES to be held which is fabulous until I need to go to the bathroom or shower or do any housework. The moby wrap has proven to be pretty useful but it does have it’s limitations.

At two months he’s started having lots more awake time which is full of smiles and kicking.

2 months002

When he naps during the day, the biggest trick is trying to figure out where he wants to sleep: the crib, bassinet, floor, swing, rocking chair, my bed..nobody knows. And there’s no constant factor. Its different every time. But one sure fire way to get him to sleep is a stroller ride.

2months 005

^^He super LOVES baths…maybe we should get him a boy towel haha

Remi hate hate HATES to be cold! We could be outside in 90 degree weather but if there is any amount of a breeze he wants to wrapped in a blanket.

So far having a baby boy isn’t too much different than having a baby girl. A baby is just a baby.

The biggest difference is the fact that he’s baby number two. I spend most of my time oggling at Evelyn’s vocabulary and brilliance and there’s not much time left to stare at the angel that is my sleeping baby boy.
